Power to Arrest and Authorized Use of Force (Guard Card)

Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Guard Card Course

Course Price: $160.00

CA law requires all security guards to pass an 8-hour BSIS Powers to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force certification course to possess a CA state-issued Guard Card. This initial 8-hour course will allow you to obtain your CA BSIS Guard Card. In addition, you will also be required to pass 32 hours of training (which you can enroll in our online courses via Defencify), which must be completed within 6 months after applying for the guard card.

After enrolling in the Guard Card course, please make sure that you arrive at 8:30 a.m. for registration. Class starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m.

Requirements:

1. Must possess a valid CA Driver’s License, ID Card, or U.S. Passport

2. Must be at least 18 years old or older

3. Must be a citizen of the United States or have permanent legal alien status.

4. Anyone suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be allowed to take the course. SPLIT-SECOND RESPONSE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE.

Please Bring the following Items:

1. Pen and notebook

2. CA Photo ID, DL, or U.S. Passport and Social Security Card (original)

Note: The costs of the BSIS application fee ($60) and the Live Scan fee for the DOJ/FBI Criminal Background Check, which is a mandatory requirement, are not included.

MANDATORY COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Mandatory training consisting of 32 Hours of Continuing Education/Skills Training is required by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) within 6 months of registration as a new security guard, or employment, as detailed below:

16 Hours within 30 days of registration, or employment, (8 Hours of Mandatory Topics and 8 Hours of Elective Topics). The elective topics include 1.) Public Relations, 2.) Observation and Documentation, 3.) Communication and It's Significance, and 4.) Liability and Legal Aspects.

Additional 16 hours within 6 months of registration, or employment, (8 Hours of Mandatory Topics and 8 Hours of Elective Topics)

bsis baton and Handcuffing course

Baton Course

To carry a baton as a CA Security Guard, you are required to take an 8-hour BSIS Baton Training Course. Upon completion of the baton training and upon passing the written test, you will receive your Baton Permit.

**Carrying a baton without a BSIS baton permit and a valid BSIS guard card is a Felony in California. **

Course Description:

Our BSIS Baton and Handcuffing Training Course is designed to teach students discretion, restraint, and techniques involving baton handling and effective handcuffing. The course will cover moral/legal aspects, use of force, and de-escalation. The training will also cover the use of straight batons and expandable batons. The first 4 hours of the course cover the classroom portion and a written test, which you must pass to continue. The last 4 hours will cover the practical hands-on techniques.

To receive your Baton Certificate and for faster processing, it is recommended that you submit your application online by going to the BSIS website and registering/logging into your BREEZE account.

Note: ***Only registered Security Guards or Security Guard applicants may enroll in this course***

Please arrive at 8:30 a.m. for registration. The class begins at 9:00 a.m.

Course Outline:

1. Moral and legal aspects of baton usage

2. Use of force

3. De-escalation and escalation of force

4. First aid for baton injuries

5. Practical hands-on technique of baton handling.

Requirements:

1. Must possess a valid CA Driver’s License or ID Card

2. Bring a valid BSIS Guard Card

3. Must be at least 18 years of age or older

4. Must be a U.S. Citizen or have permanent resident alien status

5. Anyone suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be allowed to take the course.

Clothing:

1. Must wear a belt

2. Loose comfortable clothing, no sweats

BSIS Firearms Certification Course

Course Outline

At Split Second Response, we are proud to offer the Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS) Firearms Certification Course. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to safely and effectively use firearms in a security context. The course consists of both a classroom lecture portion and a shooting range training portion. During the lecture portion, students will learn about the moral and legal aspects of firearm use, safe handling, cleaning the firearm, fundamentals of shooting, drawing, holstering, and emergency situations. They will also cover the use of force, and de-escalation, and take a written test to assess their knowledge.

Once students have successfully completed the lecture portion of the course, they will move on to the shooting range training portion. Here, they will receive hands-on instruction in firearm safety, handling, and shooting techniques, under the guidance of our expert instructors.

At the end of the course, students who pass both the written and shooting range tests will receive the necessary documents to submit to the BSIS to receive your Exposed Firearm Permit, which is valid for two years.

9. Report of Separation (military discharge - Form DD214)

10. Birth Certificate

11. U.S. Passport Book/Card (unexpired)

12. Permit to Re-enter U.S.

13. Refugee or parolee documents only if accompanied by INS Form AR-3a, or I-551
