Power to Arrest Course
The Power to Arrest Course consists of four hours of training in two subjects. The first subject is the Power to Arrest portion, which covers the legal aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements relating to the arrest of an individual. This portion of the course is designed to familiarize and instruct individuals on the training topics delineated in the Business and Professions Code section 7583.7.
During the Power to Arrest portion of the course, students will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs' Power to Arrest Training Manual, which includes lectures, discussion, exercises, and role-playing. Topics covered include an overview of the Power to Arrest Manual and subject matter, a definition of arrest and discussion on the implications to the subject, the guard, and the company, a lecture/discussion on escalation and de-escalation techniques in the use of force, a lecture/discussion on the use of restraint techniques and their implications, a discussion of trespassing laws and implications of enforcement, and the completion of the Power to Arrest Training Manual test with a 100% score in accordance with the Manual's Administering Instructions.

Appropriate Use of Force (AUF)
This portion aims to familiarize and instruct individuals on the subject matter and skills required to determine the reasonableness of using force. Appropriate Use of Force must be fact-specific, based on the circumstances confronting the individual when the force is used, in addition to Penal Code section 835(a). The reasonableness of a particular use of force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable person on the scene rather than with hindsight. The evaluation should be based on the facts and circumstances confronting the individual without regard to their underlying intent or motivation.
